Paper. We use it every day and then nonchalantly toss it away, only vaguely aware that in earlier days it was a valuable commodity, not lightly disposed of. From ancient Egypt, Mexico, and the Far East came such ancestors of today's paper as papyrus, amate, and "rice" paper. Through this book, we learn of the techniques used to make them, of the chemistry and tools of more modern papermaking, and of watermarks and methods of dating paper. The daily workings of a paper mill come to life as described by master papermaker Georg Anzelius of Tumba Bruk, a Swedish mill. Archival photos, line drawings, and old wood block prints help illustrate the history and processes of paper making. Bibliophiles and those who appreciate fine paper may be disappointed in finding that the only color illustrations in the book are of contemporary, avant-garde paper crafts. Although international paper-making authority Rudin is Swedish, he writes in English, and at least 40 percent of the titles cited in the bibliography are in English.-Margarete Gross, Chicago P.L.Copyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc.
